A 90-Day SEO Plan for Small Businesses

A realistic first 90 days of SEO for a small business: fix the foundations, improve the pages that matter, build local trust and measure what changed.

SEO can feel like an endless to-do list. It helps to put the work in order. This plan is what a sensible first three months looks like for a typical small business with a website that’s been neglected for a while. You can do it yourself, with help, or hand it over entirely.

A quick reality check before you start: 90 days is enough to fix problems, build the right pages and see early movement. It’s usually not enough to see the full payoff, which tends to build over the following months.

Before day one: get access sorted

  • Google Search Console: verify your site. This is where Google tells you how you’re doing in search.
  • Google Analytics 4: make sure it’s installed and recording.
  • Google Business Profile: claim or confirm ownership, if you serve a local area.
  • Website login: make sure you, not just your web designer, have admin access.

Month 1: Foundations

Week 1: Measure where you are

  • Note last year’s numbers from Search Console: clicks, impressions, top pages, top searches.
  • Write down how many calls and enquiries you currently get, and roughly where they come from.
  • Set up lead tracking: form submissions and click-to-call recorded as events in Analytics.

Week 2: Fix technical blockers

  • Confirm Google can index your important pages (Search Console → Pages; URL Inspection).
  • Check for stray noindex tags, robots.txt blocks, broken pages and redirect chains. Our guide to sites not showing on Google walks through these.
  • Make sure only one version of your site loads (https, with or without www, but not both).

Week 3: Speed and mobile basics

  • Run your key pages through PageSpeed Insights.
  • Compress oversized images, remove plugins you don’t use, and check that buttons are easy to tap on a phone.

Week 4: Business Profile

  • Correct your name, categories, hours, services and service areas.
  • Add real photos.
  • Start asking every happy customer for a review (no incentives). See our local SEO guide for the rules.

Month 2: The pages that make money

Week 5: Decide what each page is for

List your main services and the searches that match them. Give each important service one page. Note where two pages compete for the same topic, and plan to merge them.

Weeks 6–7: Rewrite or build service pages

Follow the structure in how to write service pages that rank: what it is, who it’s for, how it works, cost guidance, proof, FAQs, one clear call to action. Two or three excellent pages beat ten thin ones.

  • Unique, specific title tags (around 60 characters) for every key page.
  • Descriptions that make someone want to click.
  • Link from your home page, menu and related pages to your service pages.

Month 3: Trust and measurement

Week 9: Show you’re real

  • Add genuine reviews and project photos to service pages, with permission.
  • Make your About page about the people doing the work.
  • Make sure your contact details are identical everywhere.

Week 10: Earn a few good mentions

Local chambers, trade associations, suppliers, partners and community sponsorships. A handful of relevant, real links and listings is the goal. Don’t buy links.

Week 11: Publish one genuinely useful guide

Take the question you’re asked most often and answer it thoroughly on your site. Link it to the relevant service page.

Week 12: Review and plan the next quarter

Compare with your week-one numbers:

  • Are impressions rising for your service searches?
  • Are clicks from searches without your business name growing?
  • Did organic leads change?
  • What worked best, and what should you do more of?

Our guide to what a good SEO report looks like explains which numbers deserve your attention.

What to skip in the first 90 days

  • Dozens of blog posts on loosely related topics
  • Chasing national rankings when your customers are local
  • Paying for link packages
  • Redesigning the whole site (unless it’s genuinely broken, and then follow a redesign checklist)
